- Drain pan
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Extension bar with socket wrench
- Adjustable wrench
- RTV silicone sealant
- Coolant
- New water pump
- Gasket
- Rags
- Work gloves
Procedure:
1. Park your car on a level surface, turn off the engine, and allow it to cool down.
2. If you have one, engage the parking brake. Engage the parking brake on models not equipped with an emergency brake pedal by using the following procedure instead. Put the transmission into “PARK” (automatic transmission) or 1st (manual transmission). Use wheel chocks behind the wheels that will remain on the ground.
3. Drain the coolant from the radiator.
- Place a drain pan beneath the radiator drain petcock, which is usually located near the bottom of the right or left side of the radiator.
- Turn the petcock counterclockwise to open it.
- Allow the coolant to drain completely.
4. Locate the water pump.
- It is usually located on the front of the engine, near the bottom.
5. Disconnect the serpentine belt.
- Use the appropriate wrench to loosen the belt tensioner and remove the belt.
6. Disconnect the hoses from the water pump.
- Use a flat-head screwdriver to loosen the hose clamps and remove the hoses.
- Be careful not to spill any coolant.
7. Remove the bolts holding the water pump in place.
- Use the extension bar with the appropriate socket wrench to remove the bolts.
8. Remove the old water pump and gasket.
- Use a pry bar to carefully remove the old water pump and gasket.
- Be careful not to damage the gasket surface.
9. Clean the gasket surface.
- Use a rag and some solvent to clean the gasket surface on the engine block.
10. Apply RTV silicone sealant to the new gasket.
- Use your finger to apply a thin bead of sealant to the new gasket.
11. Install the new water pump and gasket.
- Carefully align the new water pump with the gasket surface and install the bolts.
- Tighten the bolts in a crisscross pattern to evenly distribute the torque.
12. Reconnect the hoses to the water pump.
- Use the hose clamps to secure the hoses.
13. Reconnect the serpentine belt.
- Use the appropriate wrench to tighten the belt tensioner and install the belt.
14. Close the radiator drain petcock.
- Turn the petcock clockwise to close it.
15. Refill the coolant.
- Add coolant to the radiator until the level reaches the "FULL" mark.
16. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
- Check for any leaks from the water pump.
- If there are no leaks, turn off the engine and allow it to cool down.
17. Recheck the coolant level and top it off as necessary.
18. Test drive the vehicle to make sure the water pump is working properly.
