Step-by-Step Instructions:
NOTE: Allow the engine to cool down completely before attempting any repairs.
1. Disconnect Battery:
Disconnect the vehicle's battery as a safety precaution to avoid any electrical accidents during the repair.
2. Drain the Coolant:
Move a flat pan or container underneath the radiator cap. Open the radiator cap and allow all the coolant to drain into the container.
3. Remove Radiator Hose Clamps:
Locate the upper and lower radiator hoses. Use hose clamp pliers to loosen and remove the radiator hose clamps that connect the hoses to the water pump.
4. Remove Radiator Hoses:
Disconnect the upper and lower radiator hoses from the water pump. Allow any additional coolant to drain into the container.
5. Remove the Thermostat Housing Bolts:
Locate the thermostat housing on top of the water pump. Use a wrench or socket set to loosen and remove the bolts holding the thermostat housing in place.
6. Remove Thermostat Housing:
Remove the thermostat housing and gasket. Be careful because some vehicles have a thermostat and spring located in the housing that may fall out during disassembly.
7. Remove Water Pump Bolts:
Using a wrench or socket set, loosen and remove the bolts holding the water pump in place. Remember the location of these bolts as they may differ in size or length and should be reinstalled in their proper positions.
8. Remove the Water Pump:
Gently pry or tap the water pump until it comes loose from the engine block. It may be necessary to use a pry bar carefully.
9. Clean the Mounting Surface:
Clean the water pump mounting surface on the engine block to remove any old gasket residue. Ensure that the surface is clean and free from any debris that could affect the seal of the new water pump.
10. Install the New Gasket:
Place the new water pump gasket on the water pump mounting surface. Make sure that the gasket is properly aligned and seated.
11. Install the New Water Pump:
Align the new water pump with the mounting surface and carefully place it into position. Install the bolts and hand-tighten them.
12. Reinstall the Thermostat:
Place the new thermostat gasket onto the thermostat housing surface and re-insert the thermostat and spring (if applicable). Reattach and tighten the thermostat housing securely using the bolts removed during disassembly. Make sure to tighten them in a crisscross pattern to avoid creating uneven pressure.
13. Reinstall Radiator Hoses:
Reattach the upper and lower radiator hoses to the water pump. Use new hose clamps to secure them tightly.
14. Refill with Coolant:
Replace the radiator cap and begin adding the appropriate type and quantity of coolant to the radiator. Refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual for the specific amount of coolant required. If it is concentrated coolant, don't forget to dilute it properly with distilled water.
15. Check for Leaks:
Start the vehicle and let it run for a few minutes to circulate the coolant. Check for any leaks around the water pump and radiator hoses. If necessary, tighten the bolts and hose clamps a bit more to stop any leakage.
16. Reconnect Battery:
Reconnect the vehicle’s battery.
17. Test the System:
Take your Hilux for a test drive to ensure the water pump is functioning correctly and that the engine temperature remains stable.
Note:
Remember to dispose of the old coolant properly and do not pour it into drains or waterways. It should be taken to a local recycling center for safe disposal.
