Step-by-Step Guide
1. Park your vehicle on a level surface and allow the engine to cool down completely. Engage the parking brake and chock the wheels to prevent the car from rolling.
2. Locate the oil pan drain plug and remove it using a 17 mm socket wrench. Allow the oil to drain into the drain pan. Replace the drain plug once all the oil has drained out.
3. Locate the oil filter and remove it using an oil filter wrench. Be careful not to spill any oil.
4. Slide a flat-head screwdriver between the oil pan gasket and the oil pan. Carefully pry the gasket loose, being careful not to damage the sealing surface of the oil pan or the gasket. Remove the old gasket completely.
5. Clean the sealing surfaces of the oil pan and the engine block thoroughly using a wire brush or sandpaper. Ensure that all traces of the old gasket are removed.
6. Apply a thin bead of RTV silicone sealant to the sealing surface of the oil pan. Make sure that the sealant is evenly distributed and there are no gaps.
7. Place the new oil pan gasket in place, ensuring that it is properly seated. Carefully press the gasket into place to ensure a good seal.
8. Reinstall the oil pan bolts and tighten them in a criss-cross pattern using a 10 mm socket wrench. Tighten the bolts to the specified torque (18 ft-lbs for the Mitsubishi Eclipse GT).
9. Reinstall the oil filter and tighten it securely using an oil filter wrench.
10. Reinstall the oil drain plug and tighten it securely using a 17 mm socket wrench.
11. Lower the vehicle and fill it with the recommended amount and type of oil. Check the oil level and ensure that it is within the specified range.
12. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks around the oil pan gasket. If there are no leaks, turn off the engine and allow it to cool down.
13. Re-check the oil level and top up if necessary.
Your oil pan gasket replacement is now complete. Remember to properly dispose of the old oil and filter according to local regulations.
