Step 1: Prepare Your Vehicle
- Park your car on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
- Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down completely.
- Disconnect the negative terminal of your car battery to avoid any electrical accidents.
Step 2: Locate the Neutral Safety Switch
The neutral safety switch is usually located near the transmission shifter assembly, usually on the side or underneath it. It may be attached with bolts or screws and connected with electrical connectors.
Step 3: Disconnect the Electrical Connectors
- Locate the electrical connectors attached to the neutral safety switch.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry open the locking tab on the connectors and unplug them from the switch.

Step 4: Remove the Bolts or Screws

Step 5: Remove the Neutral Safety Switch
Once the bolts or screws are removed, gently lift the neutral safety switch out of its position. It might require some wiggling and maneuvering to free it from the transmission shifter assembly.
Step 6: Install the New Switch (if Replacing)
If you're replacing the old switch, reverse the steps above to install the new neutral safety switch. Make sure to reconnect the electrical connectors and secure it with the bolts or screws.
Step 7: Reconnect the Battery
Reconnect the negative terminal of your car battery.
Step 8: Test the Switch
Start your vehicle and check if the car starts in both "Neutral" and "Park" positions. The neutral safety switch ensures that the car can only be started when the transmission is in these two positions.
