How does one change the starter in a 1982 Honda Civic Deluxe?

1. Disconnect the battery.

- Disconnect the negative battery terminal using an 8mm wrench or socket.

2. Remove the air cleaner housing.

- Loosen the two 10mm bolts holding the air cleaner cover and remove the air cleaner hose from the carburetor air inlet.

- Remove the air filter element, unclip the wire harness, and lift off the air cleaner cover.

3. Remove the starter motor heat shields.

- Unbolt the mounting bracket from the intake manifold using a 12mm socket.

4. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the starter solenoid.

- Use a screwdriver or small pry bar to remove the spade terminals of the starter solenoid.

5. Remove the starter motor mount bolts.

- There are two bolts: a 14mm bolt to the rear of the engine block and a 12mm bolt to the front.

- Use a socket or combination wrench to remove these bolts.

6. Remove the starter motor.

- Once all of the bolts are removed, you can wiggle the starter motor and pull it straight out from the engine compartment.

7. Inspect the starter motor for any damage or wear.

- Check the teeth of the starter's gear to ensure they are in good condition. Also, inspect the bushings, and make sure that there is no play in the shaft.

8. To reinstall the starter motor, simply reverse the steps above.
