How do you replace the three rear spark plugs on a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon 2.7?

Replacing the rear spark plugs on a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon 2.7L V6 engine can be a bit tricky, but with the right tools and a bit of patience, you can get the job done. Here are the steps on how to replace the three rear spark plugs:

Tools and Materials Needed:

- Socket set (metric)

- Spark plug wrench or long extension

- Spark plug gap tool

- New spark plugs (preferably iridium or platinum)

- Dielectric grease

- Clean rag

Step 1: Preparation

- Allow the engine to cool down completely as working near a hot engine can be dangerous.

- Disconnect the negative terminal of your car's battery to avoid any electrical accidents.

- Remove the plastic engine cover by unlatching it and lifting it off.

Step 2: Accessing the Spark Plugs

1. Locate the ignition coils on the rear side of the engine, towards the firewall.

2. On the 2.7L engine, the rear coils are located under the plastic cover with the engine codes near the oil filter.

3. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition coils. Press down on the tabs and gently pull the connectors upwards.

Step 3: Removing the Old Spark Plugs

1. Use a socket wrench with an appropriate-sized spark plug socket to loosen the ignition coils.

2. Once the coils are loose, you may have to use an extension bar and a swivel adapter to reach the spark plugs below.

3. Use the extension bar and the spark plug socket to loosen and remove the old spark plugs. Be careful not to drop them into the engine bay.

Step 4: Checking and Gapping

1. Compare the old spark plugs with the new ones you intend to install. Ensure they have the same thread length and tip style.

2. If necessary, use a spark plug gap tool to adjust the gap on the new spark plugs according to the manufacturer's specifications.

Step 5: Installing the New Spark Plugs

1. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the threads of the new spark plugs to prevent them from seizing.

2. Thread the new spark plugs into their respective holes by hand until they are snug. Avoid cross-threading.

3. Use the socket wrench and extension bar to tighten the spark plugs, snugging them up until they feel firm but not over-tightened.

Step 6: Reinstall the Ignition Coils

1. Reconnect the electrical connectors to the ignition coils, ensuring they snap into place securely.

2. Use a socket wrench to reinstall and tighten the ignition coils until they are snug.

Step 7: Reinstall the Engine Cover

1. Replace the plastic engine cover and secure it properly.

Step 8: Reconnect the Battery

1. Reconnect the negative terminal of the car's battery.

Step 9: Start the Engine

1. Start the car and let it run for a few minutes to ensure that the new spark plugs are working properly.

Note: It's always a good idea to replace all three spark plugs at the same time to ensure consistent performance. Additionally, if you are replacing spark plugs on a high mileage engine, it may be advisable to clean the throttle body and perform other maintenance tasks to help optimize the engine's performance.
