The thermostat on a 1999 Mazda 626 is located inside the engine compartment, behind the intake manifold. It is located inside a housing that connects the upper and lower radiator hoses.
Tools Needed:
To replace the thermostat, you will need the following tools:
* Socket wrench set
* Screwdriver
* Funnel
* Pliers
* New thermostat (OEM or equivalent)
* Coolant (Dex-Cool or equivalent, mix with water according to manufacturer's instructions)
Procedure:
1. Park the vehicle on level ground and allow the engine to cool down completely.
2. Open the hood and locate the thermostat housing.
3. Use the pliers to pinch and release the spring clamps on both the upper and lower radiator hoses attached to the thermostat housing.
4. Use the socket wrench to remove the bolts holding the thermostat housing to the engine block.
5. Gently remove the thermostat housing from the engine. Be careful as some coolant may spill.
6. Remove the old thermostat from its recess using a screwdriver.
7. Inspect the thermostat for any signs of damage or malfunction, such as cracks, warping, or corrosion.
8. Place the new thermostat in the housing, ensuring that it is properly seated and flush with the surface.
9. Replace the thermostat housing and secure it using the bolts and spring clamps removed earlier.
10. Refill the coolant system with the premixed coolant using a funnel. Make sure to fill the coolant reservoir to the appropriate level.
11. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes to allow the thermostat to open and circulate the coolant.
12. Check for any leaks around the thermostat housing. If there are no leaks, close the hood, and you're done.
Remember to dispose of the old thermostat and coolant properly according to local regulations.
