How do you change the transmission fluid on a 1998 Subaru Outback?

1. Gather the Necessary Tools and Materials

- New transmission fluid (check your owner's manual for the correct type and quantity)

- Transmission fluid drain pan

- Funnel

- Wrench

- Rags

- Safety glasses

2. Prepare Your Vehicle

- Park your vehicle on a level surface.

- Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down.

- Engage the parking brake.

- Raise the vehicle using a jack and jack stands.

3. Locate the Transmission Drain Plug

- The transmission drain plug is usually located on the bottom of the transmission housing.

- It is typically a 17mm bolt.

4. Drain the Transmission Fluid

- Place the transmission fluid drain pan under the transmission drain plug.

- Use the wrench to loosen the transmission drain plug.

- Allow the transmission fluid to drain completely.

5. Replace the Transmission Drain Plug

- Once the transmission fluid has drained completely, replace the transmission drain plug.

- Tighten the transmission drain plug until it is snug.

6. Fill the Transmission with New Fluid

- Use the funnel to add new transmission fluid to the transmission.

- Add the amount of transmission fluid specified in your owner's manual.

7. Check the Transmission Fluid Level

- Use the transmission fluid dipstick to check the transmission fluid level.

- The transmission fluid level should be between the "full" and "add" marks on the dipstick.

8. Lower the Vehicle

- Carefully lower the vehicle from the jack stands.

9. Start the Engine and Test the Transmission

- Start the engine and allow it to run for a few minutes.

- Shift through all of the gears and make sure that the transmission is functioning properly.

10. Dispose of the Old Transmission Fluid

- Dispose of the old transmission fluid properly.
