Tools Needed
* 10mm socket
* 12mm socket
* 14mm socket
* Ratchet
* Extension
* Breaker bar
* Jack and jack stands
* Safety glasses
Instructions
1. Park your Trooper on a level surface and turn off the engine.
2. Engage the parking brake.
3. Jack up the front of your Trooper and support it on jack stands.
4. Locate the starter. It is located on the passenger side of the engine, near the bottom.
5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
6. Remove the two 12mm bolts that hold the starter in place.
7. Remove the 14mm nut that connects the starter to the solenoid.
8. Gently pry the starter away from the flywheel.
9. Inspect the starter for any damage. If the starter is damaged, replace it with a new one.
10. Reinstall the starter in the reverse order that you removed it.
11. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
12. Lower your Trooper off the jack stands.
13. Start the engine and test the starter.
Tips
* Be careful not to drop the starter. It is a heavy object and could cause injury if it falls on you.
* If you are uncomfortable working on your own vehicle, you can have the starter replaced by a qualified mechanic.
Troubleshooting
If the starter does not work after you have replaced it, there may be a problem with the electrical connection. Check the following:
* The negative battery cable is properly connected.
* The 14mm nut that connects the starter to the solenoid is tight.
* The starter relay is working properly.
If you are still having problems, you should have your Trooper diagnosed by a qualified mechanic.
