Tools Needed:
- Socket set
- Wrench set
- Pliers
- Pry bar
- C-clamp or vise grips
- Replacement CV axle
- Grease (compatible with CV joints)
Procedure:
1. Prepare the vehicle: Park your Isuzu Trooper on a level surface, apply the parking brake, and chock the wheels to ensure stability.
2. Locate the CV axle: Identify the faulty CV axle. It is the shaft that connects the transmission to the wheel.
3. Remove the wheel: Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel attached to the faulty CV axle. Raise the vehicle using a jack and remove the wheel completely.
4. Remove the hubcap: Pry off the hubcap to access the CV axle nut.
5. Loosen the CV axle nut: Use a socket wrench to loosen the CV axle nut, but do not remove it completely. This nut holds the CV axle in place.
6. Separate the ball joint: Disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Use a pry bar and a mallet to carefully pry the ball joint loose.
7. Remove the CV axle nut: Remove the CV axle nut completely.
8. Pull the CV axle: Use a pry bar or C-clamp to pry the CV axle out of the wheel hub assembly. It may require some force to break it free.
9. Clean the CV axle assembly: Clean the CV axle and wheel hub assembly thoroughly to remove any dirt or debris.
10. Insert the new CV axle: Insert the new CV axle into the wheel hub assembly. Make sure to align the splines of the CV axle with the splines in the hub.
11. Secure the CV axle nut: Tighten the CV axle nut and replace the hubcap.
12. Reconnect the ball joint: Reattach the ball joint to the steering knuckle.
13. Install the wheel: Reinstall the wheel onto the vehicle and lower it using the jack. Tighten the lug nuts securely.
14. Test the CV axle: Take the vehicle for a short test drive to ensure the CV axle is functioning properly.
15. Apply grease: Apply grease to the CV axle joint to ensure smooth operation and longer lifespan.
Note: It's important to consult a repair manual specific to your Isuzu Trooper model for detailed instructions and torque specifications.
