Before beginning the steering wheel removal process, ensure the vehicle is turned off and the parking brake is engaged.
1. Disconnect the Battery's Negative Terminal:
Disconnect the negative terminal of your vehicle's battery to avoid any electrical hazards during the repair.
2. Remove the Airbag Assembly:
Locate the airbag module's retaining screws behind the steering wheel. Remove these screws carefully to separate the airbag module from the steering wheel.
Once the screws are out, you can gently lift the airbag and unplug any electrical connectors attached to it. Ensure not to damage the SRS connectors and airbag assembly during this process.
3. Undo Steering Wheel Bolts:
On the back side of the steering wheel, you'll find two or three bolts securing the steering wheel to the steering column. You'll likely need a ratchet and an appropriate socket to remove these bolts.
4. Mark Steering Wheel Position:
Before completely taking the steering wheel off, mark its current position relative to the steering column. You'll need this reference point when you reinstall the steering wheel to maintain the correct alignment.
5. Remove the Steering Wheel:
Once the bolts are loosened and removed, firmly grip the steering wheel and gently pull it towards yourself, wiggling it as needed to free it from the column.
6. Disconnect Electrical Connections:
Behind the steering wheel, there may be electrical connectors for accessories like the horn or cruise control. Disconnect them carefully if needed.
Note: If you encounter any resistance while removing the steering wheel, do not force it. There might be additional retaining mechanisms or connectors you may need to locate and disconnect before the wheel can be completely removed.
Be mindful of the airbag assembly and related wiring when you install the steering wheel back onto the column. Ensure all bolts are tightened securely before reconnecting the negative terminal of the battery and testing the functionality of the steering wheel and associated components.
