Tools and Materials:
- Socket wrench set
- Wrench set
- Pliers
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Pry bar
- New CV joint
- Grease
- Replacement axle nut
Procedure:
1. Safety First:
- Park your Mazda 3 on a level surface and apply the parking brake. Chock the wheels to prevent the car from rolling.
- Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to cut the power supply.
2. Remove the Wheel:
- Jack up the front of the Mazda 3 and place jack stands under designated jacking points.
- Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel.
3. Remove the Axle Nut:
- Locate the axle nut on the hub of the wheel bearing. Use a wrench to loosen the axle nut, but don't remove it completely.
4. Separate the Ball Joint:
- Find the lower ball joint connecting the control arm to the steering knuckle. Use a flat-head screwdriver or pry bar to separate the joint.
5. Remove the Tie-Rod End:
- Locate the tie-rod end connected to the steering knuckle. Remove the cotter pin and loosen the nut securing it. Use a wrench or tie-rod removal tool to separate the tie-rod end.
6. Remove the Driveshaft:
- Insert a pry bar between the hub and the driveshaft to pry the driveshaft out of the wheel hub.
- Support the driveshaft to avoid putting strain on the transmission.
7. Remove the Old CV Joint:
- Remove the circlip or snap ring securing the CV joint to the driveshaft.
- Use a pry bar to pop the CV joint off the driveshaft.
8. Install the New CV Joint:
- Pack the new CV joint with grease.
- Slide the CV joint onto the driveshaft and secure it with the circlip or snap ring.
- Ensure the CV joint is fully seated.
9. Reassemble the Driveshaft:
- Reinsert the driveshaft into the wheel hub.
- Install and tighten the axle nut.
10. Reconnect Components:
- Reattach the ball joint to the control arm.
- Reinstall the tie-rod end and secure it with the cotter pin and nut.
11. Reinstall the Wheel:
- Mount the wheel back onto the hub and secure it with the lug nuts. Lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts further.
12. Test Drive:
- Reconnect the battery's negative terminal.
- Start the Mazda 3 and test drive it to ensure that the CV joint is functioning properly.
