Required Tools:
Socket wrench
Slotted screwdriver
Pliers
Flat blade screwdriver
Chalk
Procedure:
1. Start by applying the parking brake. Then drive the vehicle forward 10 feet.
2. When you exit the car put a chalk mark on the ground near the wheels to mark where they stop with the parking brake engaged.
3. Raise the rear end of the vehicle with a jack. Be sure to engage the parking brake before raising. Never work on a vehicle that is held up by a jack alone. Use Jack stands to support the vehicle.
4. Remove the rear wheel(s).
5. Remove the brake drum by gently prying it off the hub. Be careful not to damage the brake shoes or the brake drum.
6. If the parking brake cable is already fully extended release the adjuster a couple clicks in order to allow the shoe adjuster lever to extend out slightly.
7. Inspect the brake shoes and lining. If they are worn or damaged, they will need to be replaced.
8. Make the adjustment with a slotted screwdriver by pulling the adjuster lever with the screwdriver. The objective is to ensure that when you re-install the brake drum or disk, the shoes or linings will just contact that inner surface by rubbing against it but not grabbing it so that the wheels still turn freely. Once the shoes or pads contact that inner surface, go one more "click" to take up any slack.
9. Test the parking brake to ensure that it is properly adjusted.
10. Re-install the brake drum, wheels and lower vehicle.
Be sure to take you car for a test drive to make sure that the parking brake works properly.
