1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
This will help to prevent any electrical accidents while you are working.
2. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it on jack stands.
This will give you access to the steering pump.
3. Remove the serpentine belt.
The serpentine belt is a long, thin belt that runs around the crankshaft, water pump, alternator, and power steering pump. To remove it, you will need to loosen the tensioner pulley and then slip the belt off of the pulleys.
4. Remove the power steering pump reservoir.
The power steering pump reservoir is a small, plastic tank that holds the power steering fluid. To remove it, you will need to disconnect the hoses that are attached to it and then unbolt it from the vehicle.
5. Remove the power steering pump.
The power steering pump is a large, metal cylinder that is attached to the front of the engine. To remove it, you will need to unbolt it from the engine and then remove the hoses that are attached to it.
6. Install the new power steering pump.
To install the new power steering pump, you will need to reverse the steps that you took to remove the old one.
7. Reinstall the serpentine belt.
Reinstall the serpentine belt by slipping it back onto the pulleys and then tightening the tensioner pulley.
8. Reconnect the battery cable.
Reconnect the negative battery cable to complete the installation process.
Here are some additional tips for changing the steering pump on a 2005 Aveo:
- Be sure to use the correct type of power steering fluid. The fluid that is recommended for the 2005 Aveo is Dexron III automatic transmission fluid.
- When you are installing the new power steering pump, be sure to tighten the bolts to the proper torque specifications. The torque specifications for the bolts that attach the power steering pump to the engine are 27 Nm (20 ft-lb).
- After you have installed the new power steering pump, you will need to bleed the air from the system. To do this, start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times. This will help to remove any air bubbles from the system.
