1. Remove the valve covers and intake manifold. Disconnect the spark plug wires and remove the distributor.
2. Turn the crankshaft until the timing mark on the harmonic balancer is aligned with the "0" mark on the timing indicator.
3. Check that the piston of the #1 cylinder is at the top of its compression stroke. To confirm this, look for the "T" mark on the harmonic balancer to align with the "0" mark on the timing indicator.
Step 2: Installing the Timing Chain Set
1. Loosen the tensioner bolt and allow the tensioner to release.
2. Remove the old timing chain, camshaft sprocket, and crankshaft sprocket.
3. Clean the camshaft and crankshaft surfaces thoroughly to ensure a good seal.
4. Place the new crankshaft sprocket on the crankshaft and secure it with the bolt. Tighten the bolt according to the manufacturer's specifications.
5. Install the new camshaft sprocket on the camshaft and tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
6. Install the new timing chain. Be sure to wrap it correctly around the sprockets and tensioner.
7. Re-tighten the tensioner bolt to ensure proper chain tension.
Step 3: Double-Check Alignment
1. Re-check that the timing marks are aligned. The timing mark on the harmonic balancer should still be aligned with the "0" mark on the timing indicator, and the #1 piston should still be at the top of the compression stroke.
2. If everything aligns, reinstall the distributor, spark plug wires, intake manifold, and valve covers.
