Instructions:
1. Engage the Parking Brake:
- Before starting, engage the parking brake. This will prevent the vehicle from rolling while you're working on it.
2. Raise the Vehicle and Remove the Lug Nuts:
- Use the jack to safely lift the vehicle and place jack stands under the frame to secure it in a raised position.
- Remove the lug nuts from the rear wheel you'll be working on using the lug wrench.
3. Remove the Wheel:
- Once the lug nuts are removed, pull the wheel straight towards you to remove it.
4. Remove the Drum Brake Cover:
- Look for the drum brake cover, usually held by a few screws or bolts. Remove these fasteners to access the brake components inside.
5. Remove the Brake Shoes and Springs:
- Inside the drum cover, you'll see the brake shoes held by springs. Use a flathead screwdriver to release these springs.
- Be careful not to lose any of the springs or other small components.
6. Clean the Brake Components:
- While the brake shoes are off, take the opportunity to clean the brake components, including the brake drum and the backing plate, using brake cleaner.
7. Inspect the Brake Components:
- While cleaning, inspect the brake components for wear or damage. If any components are worn or damaged, replace them with new ones.
8. Apply Anti-Seize Lubricant:
- Apply a thin layer of anti-seize lubricant to the contact points of the brake shoes and the shoe hold-down arms to prevent future binding or sticking.
9. Install the New Brake Shoes:
- Position the new brake shoes correctly and reattach them using the springs and fasteners you removed earlier. Make sure everything is secure.
10. Reassemble the Drum Brake:
- Reattach the brake drum cover, ensuring that it fits properly and all screws or bolts are tightened securely.
11. Reattach the Wheel:
- Place the wheel back onto the lug bolts, and put the lug nuts back on. Tighten them in a star pattern to ensure even pressure distribution.
12. Lower the Vehicle and Test:
- Gently lower the vehicle back down using the jack and remove the jack stands. Tighten the lug nuts again to ensure a snug fit.
- Test the brakes by applying gentle pressure to the brake pedal. The brake pedal should feel firm and responsive.
Remember to repeat the process for the other rear wheel if you're replacing the brakes on both sides of the vehicle.
