Before beginning, make sure that you have the following tools and materials:
- New serpentine belt
- 1/2-inch drive ratchet
- 15mm socket
- Breaker bar (optional)
- Replacement belt routing diagram
- Safety glasses
- Gloves
Step 2: Locate the serpentine belt
The serpentine belt is located on the front of the engine. It runs around the crankshaft, water pump, alternator, and air conditioning compressor.
Step 3: Relieve the tension on the belt
- Loosen the 15mm bolt on the tensioner pulley.
- Use the breaker bar (if needed) to pry the tensioner pulley away from the belt.
- The belt should now be loose.
Step 4: Remove the old belt
Slide the old belt off of the pulleys.
Step 5: Install the new belt
- Wrap the new belt around the pulleys, starting with the crankshaft.
- Make sure that the belt is properly seated in all the grooves.
- Tighten the 15mm bolt on the tensioner pulley.
Step 6: Check the belt tension
- The serpentine belt should be tight enough so that it does not slip, but not so tight that it puts excessive strain on the pulleys.
- You can check the belt tension by pressing on it with your thumb. It should give about 1/2-inch deflection.
- If the belt is too tight or too loose, adjust the tensioner pulley.
Step 7: Route the belt correctly
- Refer to the replacement belt routing diagram to make sure that the belt is routed correctly.
Step 8: Test the belt
- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
- Listen for any unusual noises or vibrations.
- If you hear anything unusual, turn the engine off and inspect the belt.
Step 9: Clean up
Dispose of the old belt properly.
Wipe up any spills or debris.
