1. Check the oil pressure gauge.
- If the oil pressure gauge shows a reading of 0 psi, the oil pump is not functioning.
- If the oil pressure gauge shows a lower than normal reading consistently, the oil pump is weak and needs to be replaced.
2. Remove the oil pressure sending unit.
- This is usually located on the engine block, near the oil filter.
- Start the engine and see if oil flows out of the sending unit hole. If there is no oil flow, the oil pump is not functioning properly.
3. Check the oil pump drive gear.
- The oil pump drive gear is located at the bottom of the distributor.
- Remove the distributor and inspect the drive gear for damage or wear. If the drive gear is damaged or worn, the oil pump will not be able to circulate oil properly.
4. Check the oil pump screen.
- The oil pump screen is located at the bottom of the oil pan.
- Remove the oil pan and inspect the screen for debris or blockage. If the screen is clogged, the oil pump will not be able to draw oil properly.
5. Check the oil pump relief valve.
- The oil pump relief valve is located on the side of the oil pump.
- Inspect the relief valve for damage or wear. If the relief valve is damaged or worn, it will not be able to regulate oil pressure properly.
