How do you replace power steering belt on 1996 dodge neon?

Tools and Materials:

- Replacement power steering belt

- 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set

- Pry bar

- Safety glasses

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Preparation

- Park your Neon in a safe and level area, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake. Allow it to cool down.

- Open the hood and locate the power steering belt. It is usually a black, ribbed belt that runs from the crankshaft pulley to the power steering pump pulley.

2. Remove the Old Belt

- Use a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket to loosen the power steering pump mounting bolts. Do not remove the bolts completely.

- Insert a pry bar between the power steering pump and the engine block. Gently pry the pump away from the engine until the belt loosens.

- Slide the old belt off the pulleys.

3. Install the New Belt

- Place the new belt around the crankshaft pulley and the power steering pump pulley.

- Use the pry bar to gently pry the power steering pump back towards the engine block until the belt is tight.

- Tighten the power steering pump mounting bolts.

4. Test the New Belt

- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.

- Check for any unusual noises or vibrations.

- If everything seems fine, turn off the engine and recheck the belt tension. Make sure it is not too tight or too loose.

5. Close the Hood

- Close the hood and you're done!

Tips:

- If the belt is too tight, it can cause the power steering pump to overheat and fail.

- If the belt is too loose, it can slip off the pulleys and cause the power steering to fail.

- Always replace the power steering belt at the recommended intervals specified in your Neon's owner's manual.

- If you are uncomfortable performing this task, have it done by a qualified mechanic.
