Tools and materials needed:
- New alternator
- Socket wrench set
- Pliers
- Screwdriver
- Safety goggles
- Gloves
Instructions:
1. Disconnect the battery. This is an important safety precaution that will prevent any electrical shocks while you are working on the alternator.
2. Remove the serpentine belt. The serpentine belt is the belt that drives the alternator, power steering pump, and air conditioning compressor. To remove it, you will need to loosen the tensioner pulley with a wrench and then slide the belt off of the pulleys.
3. Remove the alternator bracket. The alternator bracket is the bracket that holds the alternator in place. To remove it, you will need to remove the bolts that hold it to the engine block.
4. Remove the alternator. Once the alternator bracket is removed, you will be able to remove the alternator from the engine bay. To do this, you will need to remove the bolts that hold the alternator to the engine block and then disconnect the electrical connectors.
5. Install the new alternator. Reverse the steps above to install the new alternator. Be sure to tighten all of the bolts securely.
6. Reconnect the battery.
7. Start the engine and test the alternator. Turn on the engine and check the voltage at the battery. It should be between 13.5 and 14.5 volts. If it is not, the alternator may not be charging properly and you may need to take it to a mechanic for further diagnosis.
