Materials Needed:
- New alternator
- Replacement serpentine belt (if needed)
- Socket wrench set
- Extension bar
- Pliers
- Screwdriver
- Jack and jack stands (for safety)
- Safety goggles and gloves
Procedure:
1. Safety First:
- Park your Mazda 121 on level ground, apply the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Allow it to cool down.
- Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to avoid any electrical accidents.
2. Raise the Vehicle:
- Use a jack and jack stands to safely lift the front end of your Mazda 121. Ensure it's stable and secure before proceeding.
3. Locate the Alternator:
- The alternator is usually mounted on the front of the engine, near the top. It's connected to the engine by a serpentine belt.
4. Remove Serpentine Belt:
- Use the socket wrench to loosen and remove the bolts or tensioner that holds the serpentine belt.
- Slip the old belt off the pulleys.
5. Disconnect Wiring:
- Locate the electrical connections on the alternator. They may be covered by plastic caps.
- Disconnect the wiring by carefully removing the connectors.
6. Remove Mounting Bolts:
- Use the socket wrench and an extension bar to loosen and remove the bolts that hold the alternator in place.
7. Take Out Old Alternator:
- Once all the bolts are removed, carefully maneuver the old alternator out of its position. Be careful not to drop it.
8. Install New Alternator:
- Position the new alternator into place, aligning the mounting bolts.
- Secure the alternator by tightening the mounting bolts.
9. Reconnect Wiring:
- Reattach the electrical connectors that you disconnected earlier.
10. Install Serpentine Belt
- Place the new serpentine belt (if needed) around the alternator pulley and other engine pulleys according to the routing diagram.
- Tension the belt according to the manufacturer's specifications.
11. Lower the Vehicle:
- Carefully lower the vehicle using the jack and jack stands.
12. Reconnect Battery Terminal:
- Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
13. Test the System:
- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check that the alternator is charging the battery properly using a multimeter.
14. Check for Leaks:
- Visually inspect the alternator area for any leaks. Make sure there are no loose connections.
Note:
- The alternator is connected to the engine by multiple components, so take care not to damage any other parts during the replacement process.
- If you're not comfortable with car repairs or lack the necessary tools, it's best to take your Mazda 121 to a professional mechanic.
Always refer to your vehicle's specific repair manual for accurate instructions and safety precautions.
