Is It Time for a Car Tune Up?

Even though there is still plenty of warm weather for many parts of the country, it isn’t too early to start thinking about how your vehicle will survive winter weather. Schedule a full inspection of your vehicle to analyze the overall performance of your vehicle. After driving through the hot temperatures of summer, a car tune up may be needed for some adjustments to the critical operating systems.

What does a major tune up include, you wonder? The basic car tune up checklist is generally the same for most vehicles, although it is based on the age of your vehicle, the number of miles on the odometer, and the manufacturer’s recommendation. Your owner’s manual is a good resource to know when you should schedule a car tune up.

Below is a list of the basic items covered in a car tune up:

  • Spark plugs—Spark plugs in good condition should have light tan or gray insulator firing noses. If they are discolored, you may start to notice starting problems.
  • Fuel pump and filter—To allow the fuel pump to function efficiently, the fuel filter should be cleaned.
  • Fuel injectors—They should be cleaned of any debris that could affect the efficiency of the spark plugs or restrict the amount of fuel delivered to the engine.
  • Air filter— So that the engine can get the air it needs to run properly, replace the air filter (about once a year).
  • Timing—The engine timing may need to be adjusted so that your car idles smoothly.
  • PCV—The PCV valve reduces the number of toxic emissions from your vehicle. Over time, it can clog up, so it will need to be cleaned occasionally.
  • Points and condenser—Mainly found in older cars, these will need to be cleaned or replaced about every 20,000 miles.
  • Other items and operating systems—Check the other operating systems to make sure they are functioning properly, such as the brakes and suspension. Other items that can cause problems, such as the oxygen sensor, distributor cap, oil, and coolant, should be replaced as needed.

Even though your car seems to be running fine, a car diagnostic will determine if your vehicle is working at its optimum level of efficiency, or if it is starting to lose some of its power and performance capabilities.
