How Often Should a Hybrid Battery be Replaced?

When purchasing a hybrid vehicle, many people are concerned about how should a hybrid battery be replaced? And what is the cost for hybrid repairs of any nature? These are good questions to ask your mechanic before making a decision to purchase a hybrid vehicle.

Here’s a little information on how often should a hybrid battery be replaced? Generally, hybrid batteries can last between 10 to 15 years (about 120,000 to 150,000 driving miles) before coming to a risk. Some batteries may start to fail earlier at 70,000 miles, while others can go to 200,000 miles without any problems. The important thing is to have your hybrid battery checked frequently. It is also important to use a certified hybrid service center for all your hybrid repairs.

Here are six common problems you may start to notice when your hybrid battery starts to fail:

  • Decreased fuel economy
  • More frequent and rapid cycling of the battery meter
  • Reduced acceleration and “dogging”
  • Reduced usable cell capacity
  • A narrowing range for distance
  • Code and computer errors

When the battery in your hybrid vehicle is failing, you have a few options:

  • Purchase a new battery. Although this is the most expensive option, your hybrid vehicle will be able to give you another 10 years of service.
  • Buy a refurbished or rebuilt battery. These batteries may not last as long as the original, but they're about half the price of a new one.
  • Recondition current battery. The battery cells are put through a deep power cycle to rebalance the charge in each cell, restoring its performance to over 90% of its original capacity.
