Instructions:
1. Safety First: Put on your safety gear before starting.
2. Inspect the Damage: Determine the extent of the damage and identify the shingles that need to be replaced.
3. Remove Damaged Shingles: Use a pry bar or a flat pry bar to carefully pry up and remove the damaged shingles. Be careful not to damage the surrounding shingles.
4. Clean Up Debris: Remove any loose nails, dirt, or debris from the roof.
5. Measure and Cut Replacement Shingles: Measure the size of the damaged shingles and cut the replacement shingles to the same size.
6. Position the New Shingles: Place the replacement shingles in the same position as the damaged ones, aligning the edges and tabs.
7. Secure the New Shingles: Use roofing nails or screws to secure the new shingles to the roof. Ensure the nails or screws are driven through the shingle and into the roof sheathing.
8. Apply Sealant: Apply a generous bead of roof sealant to the edges and tabs of the new shingles to help prevent water from seeping in.
9. Replace Flashing (If Needed): If any flashing is damaged, remove the old flashing and install new flashing, secured with roofing nails or screws. Apply sealant around the edges of the new flashing.
10. Clean Up: Once all the new shingles are installed, clean up the work area and dispose of the old shingles properly.
11. Inspect the Repair: Check that all the new shingles are securely fastened and that there are no gaps or areas where water can penetrate.
Tips:
- Consider using a ladder with a stabilizer for safety.
- Check the weather forecast and avoid attempting repairs in wet or windy conditions.
- If the storm damage is extensive or you're not comfortable working on a roof, consider hiring a professional roofing contractor for the repairs.
