1. Gather your tools and materials:
- New oil (SAE 30 or SAE 10W-30)
- Oil filter wrench (if needed)
- Funnel
- Oil drain pan
- Rags
2. Warm up the engine:
- Run the mower for a few minutes to warm up the oil and make it easier to drain.
3. Locate the oil drain plug:
- The oil drain plug on the Craftsman 5.5 push mower is usually located on the bottom of the engine, near the oil filter.
4. Place the oil drain pan under the engine:
- Make sure the pan is large enough to catch all the oil that will drain out.
5. Remove the oil drain plug:
- Using an oil filter wrench if necessary, loosen and remove the oil drain plug.
6. Drain the oil:
- Allow the old oil to drain completely into the oil drain pan.
7. Replace the oil drain plug:
- Once the oil has drained completely, replace the oil drain plug and tighten firmly.
8. Locate the oil filter:
- On some Craftsman 5.5 push mower models, there may be an oil filter located near the engine oil drain plug.
9. Remove the oil filter:
- Using the oil filter wrench if needed, loosen and remove the oil filter.
10. Install the new oil filter:
- Apply a thin coat of new oil to the gasket of the new oil filter and screw it onto the engine until hand-tight. Do not over-tighten the oil filter.
11. Add new oil to the engine:
- Using a funnel, add the new oil to the engine. The oil capacity of a Craftsman 5.5 push mower is usually between 18-22 ounces. Refer to the owner's manual for the exact oil capacity of your mower model.
12. Check the oil level:
- Use the dipstick to check the oil level. The oil level should be between the "Full" and "Add" marks on the dipstick.
13. Start the mower and check for leaks:
- Start the mower and let it run for a few minutes. Check around the oil drain plug and oil filter for any leaks, If you notice any leaks, tighten the drain plug or oil filter as needed.
14. Dispose of the old oil properly:
- Pour the old oil from the drain pan into a sealable container and dispose of it at a recycling centre. Do not pour the old oil into the trash or storm drains.
15. Recycle the oil filter:
- Many auto parts stores and recycling centers accept used oil filters for recycling. Find a recycling center near you and drop off the used oil filter.
