Tools:
- Disk brake caliper tool set (which includes a caliper spreader, C-clamp, and other small tools)
- Socket wrench set
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Wheel chock
- Safety glasses
Vehicle Preparation:
1. Park your vehicle on a level surface and apply the parking brake.
2. Chock the wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
3. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel you'll be working on, but don't remove them completely.
4. Jack up the vehicle and secure it on jack stands.
5. Remove the wheel.
Step 2: Remove the brake caliper
1. Use the flat-head screwdriver to pry open the caliper guide pin dust covers.
2. Use the socket wrench to remove the caliper guide pins.
3. Gently pry the caliper off the brake rotor. Be careful not to damage the brake pad.
Step 3: Use the caliper spreader tool
1. Insert the caliper spreader tool between the brake pads.
2. Turn the screw on the tool to force the pads apart.
3. Continue spreading the pads until there's enough space to remove them.
4. Remove the brake pads from the caliper.
Step 4: Inspect the brake caliper and rotor
1. Inspect the brake caliper for any damage or leaks.
2. Check the brake rotor for any deep grooves or cracks. If there are any, the rotor will need to be replaced.
Step 5: Reinstall the brake pads and caliper
1. Apply a small amount of brake grease to the caliper guide pins and the brake pad contact points.
2. Insert the new or existing brake pads into the caliper.
3. Reinstall the caliper over the brake rotor.
4. Secure the caliper with the guide pins and dust covers.
5. Tighten the lug nuts on the wheel.
Step 6: Test the brakes
1. Release the parking brake.
2. Slowly lower the vehicle off the jack stands.
3. Test the brakes by applying gentle pressure to the brake pedal. The brakes should feel firm and responsive.
