How do you remove locking axle nut and wheel bearing hub on a 1999 mercury cougar?

Tools Needed:

  • Lug wrench

  • Socket wrench

  • Impact wrench

  • Hammer

  • Punch

  • Pry bar

  • Safety glasses

    Procedure:

    1. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel that has the locking axle nut. Do not remove the lug nuts completely.

    2. Use the impact wrench to remove the locking axle nut. If you do not have an impact wrench, you can use a breaker bar and a hammer to loosen the nut.

    3. Use the pry bar to pry the wheel bearing hub off of the spindle. Be careful not to damage the spindle.

    4. Remove the wheel bearing hub from the vehicle.

    5. Install the new wheel bearing hub by reversing the removal procedure.

    6. Tighten the lug nuts to the proper torque specification.

    7. Lower the vehicle and test the brakes to ensure that they are working properly.
