1984 BMW 318i how do you remove the steering wheel?

To remove the steering wheel of a 1984 BMW 318i, you will need the following tools:

- A Torx T30 screwdriver

- A 19mm socket wrench

- A steering wheel puller (this can be rented from most auto parts stores)

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

To prevent any electrical accidents, it is important to disconnect the battery before beginning any work on the steering wheel. To do this, open the hood of the car and locate the negative battery terminal (usually marked with a "-" sign). Use a wrench to loosen the nut on the negative terminal, and then disconnect the cable from the terminal.

Step 2: Remove the steering wheel airbag

The next step is to remove the steering wheel airbag. Be very careful when working with the airbag, as it can be dangerous if not handled properly. To remove the airbag, locate the two Torx T30 screws on the back of the steering wheel. Use the Torx screwdriver to remove these screws, and then carefully pull the airbag straight out from the steering wheel. Be sure to disconnect the electrical connector from the back of the airbag before completely removing it.

Step 3: Remove the steering wheel nut and puller

Use a 19 mm socket wrench to loosen and remove the steering wheel nut. Once the nut is removed, attach the steering wheel puller to the steering wheel and follow the instructions that came with the puller tool to properly and safely pull the steering wheel off of the steering shaft.

Step 4: Reinstall the steering wheel (Reverse the removal process)

To reinstall the steering wheel, simply reverse the steps that you took to remove it. First, slide the steering wheel onto the steering shaft. Next, hand tighten the steering wheel nut. Then, attach the steering wheel puller and follow the instructions that came with the tool to properly and safely seat the steering wheel onto the steering shaft. Finally, tighten the steering wheel nut with a torque wrench using a torque value of 33 pounds-feet.
