1. Locate the trunk release lever. The trunk release lever is located inside the vehicle, often near the driver's seat. In the 1987 VW Rabbit, the trunk release lever is located under the instrument panel, to the left of the steering wheel.
2. Pull the trunk release lever. Pull the trunk release lever to release the trunk latch and open the trunk lid.
3. Lift the trunk lid. Once the trunk latch is released, you can lift the trunk lid by using the handle on the inside of the trunk lid.
