1. Park the van in a safe location and turn off the engine.
2. Open the hood of the van.
3. Locate the timing belt cover. It is located on the front of the engine, just below the cylinder head.
4. Remove the timing belt cover.
5. Locate the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and the camshaft sprocket. The crankshaft pulley timing mark is a small notch, while the camshaft sprocket timing mark is a small dot.
6. Turn the crankshaft pulley until the timing marks are aligned.
7. If the timing marks are not aligned, you will need to adjust the timing belt. To do this, loosen the timing belt tensioner and use a wrench to turn the crankshaft pulley until the timing marks are aligned.
8. Once the timing marks are aligned, tighten the timing belt tensioner and replace the timing belt cover.
9. Start the engine and check the timing with a timing light. If the timing is off, you will need to adjust it again.
Here are some additional tips for checking the timing on a 1984 Volkswagen Vanagon:
* Make sure the engine is cold before starting it.
* If the engine has been running, allow it to cool down for at least 15 minutes before starting it.
* Use a high-quality timing light.
* Check the timing at idle and at high RPM.
* If the timing is off, make sure to adjust it before driving the van.
