- jack
- jack stands
- a flathead screwdriver
- pair of pliers
- a hammer
Instructions
1. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel that you will be removing the drum from. Do not remove the lug nuts completely at this point.
2. Jack up the car and place it on jack stands. Make sure that the car is securely supported before you continue.
3. Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel.
4. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry off the dust cap in the center of the brake drum.
5. Use the pliers to remove the cotter pin that holds the brake drum in place.
6. Use a hammer to gently tap the brake drum until it comes loose from the hub.
7. Pull the brake drum off of the hub.
8. Inspect the brake shoes and hardware for wear or damage. If necessary, replace the brake shoes or hardware.
9. Reassemble the brake drum and wheel in the reverse order that you removed them.
Here are some additional tips:
- When removing the brake drum, be careful not to damage the brake shoes or other components.
- If you have difficulty removing the brake drum, you can try spraying some penetrating oil on the hub and letting it sit for a few minutes before you try again.
- Be sure to replace the cotter pin when you reassemble the brake drum. This cotter pin is important for keeping the brake drum in place.
- If you have any questions or concerns about removing the rear drum brakes on your 1998 Holden Barina, consult with a qualified mechanic.
