* A socket wrench set
* A torque wrench
* A timing light
* A dial gauge
* A degreaser
* A piece of wire
1. Prepare the engine.
* Disconnect the battery.
* Remove the spark plugs.
* Remove the distributor cap.
* Remove the timing belt cover.
2. Set the engine to top dead center (TDC).
* Turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise until the piston in cylinder number one is at the top of its stroke.
* Verify that the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and camshaft sprocket are aligned.
3. Loosen the camshaft sprocket bolt.
* Use a socket wrench to loosen the camshaft sprocket bolt. Do not remove the bolt completely.
4. Install the dial gauge.
* Install the dial gauge on the cylinder head so that the plunger is contacting the top of the piston in cylinder number one.
5. Zero the dial gauge.
* Turn the dial gauge until the needle is set to zero.
6. Rotate the camshaft sprocket.
* Use a socket wrench to rotate the camshaft sprocket clockwise until the dial gauge reads 1.8mm (0.070 in).
7. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt.
* Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt to 10Nm (7 ft-lb).
8. Reinstall the timing belt cover.
9. Reinstall the distributor cap.
10. Reinstall the spark plugs.
11. Reconnect the battery.
The cam timing on your Opel Astra 180i is now set.
