Locate the flywheel. The flywheel is located on the left side of the engine, behind the starter motor. It is a large, round metal disk with a series of teeth around the edge.
Step 2:
Find the timing marks. The timing marks are located on the flywheel and the engine case. The flywheel timing mark is a small notch or line on the edge of the flywheel. The engine case timing mark is a small arrow or pointer on the engine case.
Step 3:
Align the timing marks. Rotate the flywheel until the timing marks are aligned. The flywheel timing mark should be aligned with the engine case timing mark.
Step 4:
Check the piston position. Remove the spark plug and insert a long screwdriver into the spark plug hole. Rotate the flywheel until the piston is at the top of its stroke. The screwdriver should be at the same height as the top of the piston.
Step 5:
If the timing marks are not aligned, or the piston is not at the top of its stroke, adjust the timing. To adjust the timing, loosen the bolts that hold the flywheel in place and rotate the flywheel until the timing marks are aligned and the piston is at the top of its stroke. Tighten the bolts to secure the flywheel in place.
