How do you set the timing on a 1999 suzuki quad 500 ATV?

To set the timing on a 1999 Suzuki Quad 500 ATV, you will need the following tools:

- 10mm socket

- 12mm socket

- 14mm socket

- 17mm socket

- Flathead screwdriver

- Phillips head screwdriver

- Timing light

Step 1: Preparation

a. Park your ATV on a flat surface and turn off the engine.

b. Allow the engine to cool down.

c. Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug.

Step 2: Remove the Timing Cover

a. Locate the timing cover on the right side of the engine.

b. Use the 10mm socket to remove the bolts holding the timing cover in place.

c. Remove the timing cover.

Step 3: Locate the Timing Mark

a. Look for the timing mark on the flywheel.

b. The timing mark is a small notch or line.

c. Clean the timing mark if it is dirty.

Step 4: Set the Piston to Top Dead Center (TDC)

a. Rotate the flywheel counterclockwise until the piston is at the top of the cylinder.

b. Insert a flathead screwdriver into the spark plug hole to help find TDC.

c. When the piston is at TDC, the screwdriver will be at its highest point.

Step 5: Align the Timing Mark

a. Align the timing mark on the flywheel with the index mark on the engine case.

b. Use the 12mm socket to loosen the camshaft sprocket bolt.

c. Rotate the camshaft sprocket until the timing marks are aligned.

d. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt.

Step 6: Reinstall the Timing Cover

a. Place the timing cover back onto the engine.

b. Use the 10mm socket to reinstall the bolts and secure the timing cover.

c. Make sure the o-ring is in good condition before reinstalling the cover.

Step 7: Reconnect the Spark Plug Wire

a. Reconnect the spark plug wire to the spark plug.

Step 8: Start the Engine and Check the Timing

a. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.

b. Use a timing light to verify that the timing is set correctly.

c. If the timing is not correct, repeat steps 4-7 until it is.

Note: If you do not have a timing light, you can also check the timing by ear. When the engine is running smoothly, the timing is usually set correctly. However, this method is not as precise as using a timing light.
