Is a mechanical watch the same as an automatic watch?

A mechanical watch and an automatic watch are not exactly the same. Although both are considered traditional watches compared to digital watches, they differ in their mechanisms:

1. Mechanical Watch:

- A mechanical watch operates using a manual winding mechanism.

- The wearer has to manually wind the crown periodically, typically every day, to provide the watch with the necessary energy to function.

- The watch's mainspring is wound by turning the crown, which stores the energy and powers the watch's gears and mechanisms.

2. Automatic Watch:

- An automatic watch, also known as a self-winding watch, functions through an automatic winding mechanism.

- It utilizes the natural movement of the wearer's wrist to generate energy and keep the watch running.

- Inside the watch, a rotor or a weight moves freely with the wearer's wrist movements. This motion causes the rotor to spin, which in turn winds up the mainspring, providing the necessary energy to power the watch.

While both mechanical and automatic watches are considered traditional watchmaking styles, they differ in the method of providing energy to operate. Mechanical watches require manual winding, while automatic watches leverage the wearer's movements for self-winding.
