If you have a habit of treating empty Los Angeles streets like your personal drag strip, you might want to start paying closer attention to your speedometer. In a massive bid to crack down on dangerous street racing and rising traffic fatalities, city officials have officially greenlit the installation of 125 automated speed cameras.
According to a recent report from the LA Times, these automated ticket dispensers are going up across all 15 city districts. The city is specifically targeting areas notorious for street racing, designated school zones, and intersections that have a history of incidents.
Here is everything you need to know about the rollout, how much it will cost you, and exactly where the cameras are being placed.
The Timeline and the Fines
Contractors are expected to install and calibrate the hardware between April and July. If you happen to flash through an intersection a little too fast during the initial rollout, you won’t be hit with a bill immediately. Once the system goes fully operational, the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) is offering a 60-day grace period where speeders will only receive a warning in the mail.
After those 60 days are up, the fines will start to be handed out.
The cameras are programmed to trigger if you are traveling 11 mph or more over the posted limit.
The penalty structure scales drastically depending on just how heavy your right foot is:
- $50: Driving 11 to 15 mph over the limit.
- $100: Driving 16 to 25 mph over the limit.
- $200: Driving 26 mph or more over the limit.
- $500: Clocking in at 100 mph or more.
Why the Sudden Crackdown?
This initiative is actually part of a much larger, five-year state pilot program by California lawmakers in 2023. While overall traffic deaths in Los Angeles did dip slightly between 2024 and 2025, the volume of fatal wrecks remains a massive headache for the city.
Officials believe that speeding is the primary factor in nearly one-third of all local traffic deaths.
Los Angeles is far from the only city plugging in the cameras. The state-wide pilot includes Long Beach, Glendale, San Jose, Oakland, and San Francisco, the latter of which went absolutely scorched earth by installing tens of thousands of cameras over the last two years.
Where the Cameras Will Be Fitted in Los Angeles?
Each of LA’s 15 council districts is receiving roughly eight or nine cameras. If you commute through any of the following neighborhoods, consider this your official heads-up.
