- Most common cause
- Responsible for driving many of a car's accessories
- If the belt is loose, worn, or damaged, it can slip and squeal when the engine is first started
- The squealing should go away once the belt warms up and becomes more flexible
2. Power steering pump:
- Another common cause
- As fluid passes through it, it can generate a whining or squealing noise
- The noise may be more noticeable when turning the wheel or when accelerating.
- Low power steering fluid, leaks, or a worn-out pump can all cause this issue.
3. Alternator:
- Generates electricity for the car's electrical system
- If the alternator bearing is worn or damaged, it can make a squealing noise
- The noise may be more noticeable at idle or low RPMs.
4. Air conditioning compressor:
- Compresses refrigerant to cool the car's interior
- When the compressor is engaged, it can sometimes generate a squealing or whining noise
- The noise should go away once the AC system has had time to cool down.
5. Idler pulley:
- Helps guide and tension accessory belts
- If the pulley is worn or damaged, it can cause a squealing noise.
6. Water pump:
- Circulates coolant through the engine to regulate its temperature
- If the water pump bearing is worn or the pump itself is failing, it can make a squealing noise.
