Develop a Maintenance Plan

If you are looking to reduce stress by keeping your vehicle in good working order, a vehicle maintenance plan is a quick and easy way to get started.  A regular maintenance plan can help mitigate potential mechanical problems and prolong the life of your vehicle’s main operating systems.  

In this month, we lay out a maintenance plan for you to begin caring for your vehicle.  While many of these tasks can be done by you, the service professionals at Colonial Service Station are always here to help you plan and implement your maintenance schedule.

Four Easy Maintenance Tasks

Vital Engine Fluids

Your vehicle’s engine is subjected to a significant amount of heat, motion, and wear.  That’s why many of your engine’s components are supported with various fluids to keep parts lubricated, regulate temperature, and reduce the wear of friction.

What to do:

• Check vital fluid levels and replenish fluids when below recommended levels.  
• Check these vital fluids:

• • Coolant
  • Transmission
  • Brake
  • Windshield wiper
  • Power Steering

When to do it:

• Fluids should be checked at least once every 2-3 months
• If you notice levels drop consistently, consult with a service professional

Motor Oil and Filter

Motor oil is one of the most vital fluids in your vehicle.  Without oil, your engine would face catastrophic failure very quickly.  Oil plays a critical role in protecting parts from heat, friction, and dirt.  

What to do:

• Check oil levels and look for signs of aging oil.  
• Aged oil will be dark, grimy and thick.  

When to do it:

• Change oil and filter every 3,000-7,000 miles driven.  
• Synthetic oils do not require changes as frequently but cost more.

Tires

The health of your vehicle’s tires depends a lot on the type of road conditions you drive on most frequently.  Rough road surfaces can easily take a toll on treads.  Also, if you tend to drive more long distances frequently, your tires may wear quicker.  

What to do:

• Visually inspect all four tires for wear on the treads.  Look for balding and/or low treads.
• Visually inspect the side walls for cracks and damage.
• Check the tire air pressure for each tire.  Make sure the pressure is at the level recommended by your vehicle manufacturer.  

When to do it:

• Inspect tires and check air pressure once a month.  

Windshield Wiper Blades

Your windshield wiper blades are made of a rubber substance that will crack and warp over time.  You will notice when wiper blades are worn because they are not as effective with cleaning your windshield in rainy conditions.

What do do:

• Visually inspect your wiper blades for any warping, cracks, or missing rubber.  Make sure to check any rear window blades as well.
• If you notice significant wear, or your windshield is not getting cleaned when wet, then replace the blades.

When to do it:

• Replace your windshield wiper blades at least once a year, or as needed.

Other Maintenance Tips

There are some other tasks you can add to your regular maintenance, including:

• Be alert to changes in your vehicle through your senses (smell, touch, or sight)
• Address dashboard warning lights 
• Pop the hood and look for unusual things such as loose wires, broken belts or hoses, etc.
