Should you pump the brakes if they give out?

If your brakes fail while you are driving, do not pump the brakes. Pumping the brakes will only make the situation worse by causing the brake fluid to overheat.

Instead, do the following:

- Keep the car in gear. This will help to slow the car down.

- Use the emergency brake. The emergency brake is a backup braking system that is independent of the main brake system.

- Steer the car to a safe place. If possible, pull over to the side of the road. If you are in the middle of an intersection, try to steer the car into a clear area.

- Call for help. Once you are in a safe place, call for help from a tow truck or mechanic.
