The first gas-powered car is often attributed to Karl Benz in 1886. He built the Benz Patent Motorwagen, which is considered the first gasoline-powered automobile to be commercially successful.
While other inventors were experimenting with internal combustion engines and automobiles around the same time, Benz's car was the first to be both practical and reliable enough to be considered a true automobile.
