How do you tell between 3 and 4 speed caravan transmission without pulling the pan?

You can't reliably tell the difference between a 3-speed and 4-speed caravan transmission without pulling the pan or otherwise accessing internal components. There are no external visual cues that consistently differentiate them. The number of gears is determined by the internal gear sets and their arrangement, which are not visible from the outside.
