1. Turn the key to the "ON" position (not starting): Do this for about 10-15 seconds. This allows the fuel pump to build pressure. Listen carefully – you might hear a whirring sound from the fuel pump (usually near the fuel tank in the back).
2. Repeat Step 1: If you don't hear the whirring or the car doesn't start, try again. Sometimes it takes a couple of attempts.
3. Try to start the car: Turn the key to the "START" position.
If it still doesn't start after several attempts:
* Check for other problems: Running out of gas can sometimes cause other issues. Make sure your battery is charged and your connections are clean and tight.
* Verify you actually put gas in: Double-check you added enough fuel and the fuel cap is properly secured. Sometimes a miscalculation or a faulty gas pump can leave you with less fuel than expected.
* Consider the fuel filter: If the car still doesn't start after refueling and you suspect the fuel pump's working, a clogged fuel filter is a possibility, but it's less likely immediately after running out of gas.
* Call for roadside assistance: If you've tried everything and the car won't start, it's best to call a mechanic or roadside assistance for help. There could be an unrelated problem.
Important Note: Cranking the engine repeatedly when it's not getting fuel can drain the battery. If you've tried several times and it still won't start, give the battery a rest before attempting more starts.
