To find out how much antifreeze to add:
1. Consult your owner's manual: This is the best source. It will specify the cooling system capacity and the recommended antifreeze/coolant mixture.
2. Check the radiator and overflow tank: Look for markings on the radiator and overflow tank that indicate their capacities. Add those together for a total capacity estimate. This is less accurate than the owner's manual.
3. Drain and refill: The most accurate way is to completely drain the cooling system, then measure the amount of coolant you put back in. This is a more involved process and usually requires some mechanical aptitude.
Important Note: Never add antifreeze directly to a hot engine. Always let the engine cool completely before adding or removing coolant. Also, use the type of antifreeze recommended in your owner's manual (usually 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water). Using the wrong type can damage your engine.
