The manual will specify the type of fluid (e.g., Dexron II, Dexron III, Mercon, ATF+4, etc.). Using the incorrect fluid can severely damage your transmission.

* Looking for a sticker under the hood: Sometimes a sticker near the engine bay will list the recommended fluids.
* Checking the transmission dipstick: The dipstick *might* have a fluid type recommendation on it, but this is not always the case.
* Using a vehicle identification number (VIN) lookup: Many online parts stores allow you to enter your VIN to determine the correct transmission fluid.
