* A can of R-134a refrigerant
* An AC recharge hose kit
* A pressure gauge
* A screwdriver
* A pair of safety glasses
* Gloves
Procedure
Step 1: Prep your Grand Cherokee
Park your Jeep in a shaded area and turn off the engine. Engage the parking brake and chock the wheels to prevent the vehicle from moving.
Pop the hood and locate the low-pressure service port on the air conditioning line. It's usually a smaller port with a blue or black cap.
Step 2: Connect the AC recharge hose
Attach the AC recharge hose to the low-pressure service port. Make sure the connection is tight to prevent refrigerant leaks.
Step 3: Start the engine
Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. This will circulate the refrigerant and make it easier to add new refrigerant.
Step 4: Turn on the AC system
Turn on the AC system and set it to the maximum cooling setting. This will open the expansion valve and allow refrigerant to flow into the system.
Step 5: Monitor the pressure gauge
Keep an eye on the pressure gauge as you add refrigerant. The ideal pressure for a 1997 Grand Cherokee is between 25 and 45 psi (pounds per square inch).
Step 6: Add refrigerant
Slowly open the valve on the refrigerant can to add refrigerant to the system. Be careful not to overfill the system, as this can damage the AC compressor.
Step 7: Check the AC performance
Once you've added enough refrigerant, turn off the engine and disconnect the AC recharge hose. Start the engine again and check the AC performance. The air coming out of the vents should be cold and refreshing.
If you're still not getting cold air, you may need to take your Grand Cherokee to a qualified automotive technician for further diagnosis and repair.
