- 10mm socket wrench
- 15mm socket wrench
- A ratchet
- A breaker bar
- A pry bar
Instructions
1. Locate the serpentine belt tensioner. The tensioner is located on the passenger side of the engine, near the top. It is a black metal bracket with a bolt in the center.
2. Loosen the tensioner bolt. Use the 10mm socket wrench to loosen the tensioner bolt. Do not remove the bolt completely.
3. Pry the tensioner away from the belt. Use the pry bar to pry the tensioner away from the belt. This will release the tension on the belt.
4. Remove the belt from the tensioner. Once the tension is released, you can remove the belt from the tensioner.
5. Install the new belt. Place the new belt around the pulleys in the correct order. The correct order is:
- Crankshaft pulley
- Water pump pulley
- Alternator pulley
- Power steering pump pulley
- Air conditioning compressor pulley
6. Tighten the tensioner bolt. Once the belt is installed, tighten the tensioner bolt. Tighten the bolt until the belt is snug, but not too tight.
7. Check the belt tension. Use the 15mm socket wrench to check the belt tension. The belt should deflect about 1/2 inch when you press on it with your thumb.
8. If necessary, adjust the tensioner bolt. If the belt is too loose or too tight, adjust the tensioner bolt until the belt is at the correct tension.
Tips
- When installing the new belt, make sure that it is routed correctly around the pulleys. The belt should not be twisted or kinked.
- If the belt is too loose, it will slip and make noise. If the belt is too tight, it will put excessive wear on the pulleys and belts.
- Check the belt tension regularly and adjust it as necessary.
