Running an automobile in a closed area, such as a garage or basement, can be extremely dangerous. The exhaust fumes from the car contain carbon monoxide, which is a poisonous gas that can cause death or serious injury. Carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless, so you cannot detect it without a carbon monoxide detector.
If you must work on your car in a closed area, make sure to open the doors and windows to allow fresh air to circulate. Additionally, you can open a garage door. Avoid starting the engine in a closed area, and if you must, do so for only a short period and make sure the doors or garage door is open.
If you suspect that you may have been exposed to carbon monoxide, get fresh air immediately and seek medical attention.
