Xalt Energy releases new Ultra High Energy battery cell

Once XALT Energy (formerly Dow Kokam) was one of the battery tech leaders. This cell maker had the best – yet expensive – battery cells. For this reason Xalt Energy battery cells power Formula E electric race cars since the beginning.

Curiously, this cell maker never had much luck in the mass market, especially since its most promising client, the French electric carmaker LUMENEO filed for bankruptcy in November 2013.

Xalt Energy releases new Ultra High Energy battery cell

Anyway, the new 65 Ah Ultra High Energy battery cell from Xalt shows us that this company is no longer developing cutting-edge technology, as you can see in the energy density figures below.

Gravimetric energy density: 223 Wh/kg

Volumetric energy density: 420 Wh/L

With LG Chem and SK Innovation about to introduce NCM 811 battery cells with an energy density around 620 Wh/L, introducing 420 Wh/L battery cells now seems laughable for a company that was once a battery tech leader.

First it was A123 Systems, now it’s Xalt Energy being left behind, this was unthinkable years ago, I’m getting old…
