Here are the steps to change the thermostat on a Toyota Carina E:
Step 1: Park your vehicle in a safe location and turn off the engine.
* Allow the engine to cool down completely.
Step 2: Open the hood of your vehicle.
* Locate the thermostat housing.
* The thermostat housing is usually located near the top of the engine, near the radiator hose.
Step 3: Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
*This step is important to prevent any electrical accidents.
Step 4: Drain the coolant from the radiator.
*Place a bucket under the radiator drain plug.
* Open the radiator drain plug
* Allow the coolant to drain completely
Step 5: Remove the thermostat housing bolts.
*Use a ratchet and 10mm socket to remove the thermostat housing bolts
*There are usually two or three bolts that hold the thermostat housing in place
Step 6: Remove the thermostat housing and old thermostat.
* Carefully remove the thermostat housing from the engine
*The old thermostat should come out with the housing
Step 7: Clean the thermostat housing and mating surface
*Use a rag and some degreaser to clean the thermostat housing and the mating surface on the engine block
Step 8: Install the new thermostat.
*Place the new thermostat in the thermostat housing
* Make sure that the thermostat is seated properly in the housing
Step 9: Install the new thermostat gasket.
*Place the new thermostat gasket on the thermostat housing
* Make sure that the gasket is seated properly
Step 10: Reinstall the thermostat housing.
* Carefully reinstall the thermostat housing onto the engine block
* Use a ratchet and socket to reinstall the thermostat housing bolts
Step 11: Refill the radiator with coolant.
*Use a funnel to refill the radiator with coolant.
* Fill the radiator until the coolant level is between the "Full" and "Add" marks on the coolant reservoir.
Step 12: Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
Step 13: Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
* Check for any leaks around the thermostat housing.
Step 14: Turn off the engine and let it cool down.
Step 15: Check the coolant level again and add more coolant if necessary.
