Park the vehicle on a level surface and turn off the engine.
Locate the distributor cap. It is usually located on the front of the engine, near the top.
Remove the distributor cap. To do this, you may need to use a screwdriver to pry it off.
Locate the points. The points are two small, metal contacts located inside the distributor cap.
Clean the points. Use a small, wire brush to clean the points until they are shiny.
Loosen the screw that holds the points in place.
Use a feeler gauge to measure the gap between the points. The gap should be 0.018 inches.
Adjust the points if necessary by gently bending them until the gap is correct.
Tighten the screw that holds the points in place.
Replace the distributor cap.
Start the engine and check the ignition timing. The ignition timing should be set to 5 degrees before top dead center (BTDC).
